Selling Sizzle, not the Steak

This “Africa for Norway” video exemplifies feel-good sizzle to successfully fundraise without substance. Many charities use feel-good promotions and exploitative stories without real plans, directions or accountability.

Read more about this creative team highlighting racism and charity abuse here.

The fairy tales “The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”, “The Pied Piper” and ancient Greece’s myth of Persephone’s seduction by Hades also warn about this eternal issue.

Cults, bogus charities and many many others, masterfully apply unethical marketing methods. Here is today’s TM-specific sister post on TM-Free Blog.

For safety, financial responsibility and mental health, Please learn about the steak behind any campaign’s sizzle. Don’t just donate or buy something based upon feel-good advertising. Always question celebrity-studded good intentions.

Evaluate the merit of any campaign, whether self-help, a health craze, charity, politics, sleek new car, or a fabulous online dating profile. Sizzle is often short on ethics. Ethical programs provide detailed plans, measurable results, credentials and financial statements. Do your homework and don’t be duped!

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Thankful for independent thought, lifelong learning, the loss of naiveté and so much more.

“The Master” film impression

“What are you going to see?” the middle-aged woman scooping my popcorn at the local cinema snack counter asked.

“The Master” I responded “Have you seen it yet?”

“Not yet. But everyone looks really disturbed when they exit the theater.” Her eyes crinkled with her smile as she reached across the counter with the red and white striped popcorn bag and water bottle that would accompany me for the film.

“Thanks for the warning!” I said, accepting my snack.

I wondered if I would find the film disturbing as I entered the dark movie theater alone, having chosen to avoid explaining (again!) about cult dynamics to my present social world.

Rather than being disturbed, I watched a compassionate and compelling portrayal of the early development of a destructive cult, even if the movie exaggerated the character of Freddie.

“The Master” by writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, brilliantly portrays cult vulnerability, seduction, exploitation and confusion through the character of an alcoholic WWII veteran with a family mental health history named Freddie, brilliantly played by Juaquin Phoenix. Freddie falls for the charismatic and authoritative Lancaster Dodd, founder of a group called The Cause, convincingly played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Set in post-WWII, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the leader of a cult-like group based upon the early days of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology who presents himself as a caring author, scientist and philosopher gathering wealthy adherents to promote his work. Beginning with intimate gatherings in the homes of wealthy supporters, Lancaster Dodd promotes his teachings and provides personal support to a growing flock. By the end of the film, The Cause has grown to global proportions with real estate, a private school for uniformed youth and other programs.

Juaquin Phoenix’s Freddie is the film’s disturbed central character who struggles with alcoholism and identity as he follows The Master Dodd. The film shows the majority of the The Cause’s followers as functional, well dressed professionals united by a common purpose to spread their Master’s teachings. In much the same way as my own parents and their friends began hosting Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s closest acolytes as guests in their homes in the 1960’s, with expansion to rented halls and eventually global real estate holdings. Many exploitative groups begin exactly the same way.

According to Joe Szimhart, “The film captured early L Ron Hubbard quite well in Hoffman’s character and exposes several TRs or “Training Rundowns” that Scientology uses even today in their expensive ‘pre-Clear’ sessions. Also, it shows the son as merely going along–that son co-produced a book exposing his dad later called “Messiah or Madman?” Content for the film was extracted from this book, I believe.”

For those familiar with cult dynamics, I found the film to be an excellent depiction of a once-familiar family and social dynamic. For those who are not acquainted with cult dynamics, the film may be confusing.

Paul Thomas-Anderson’s script and camera angles are the best depiction that I’ve seen yet of a variation of my own skewed upbringing. Thank you, Paul!

Undercover in Netherlands – Miracle of Love. TV show review

Alberto Stegeman, Undercover in Nederland

On February 27, 2011 Alberto Stegeman televised an investigative report with hidden cameras, revealing cult recruitment in the international “Miracle of Love” (MOL).

The entire Dutch Show can be watched here :

The television show highlights the path that a new participant in Miracle of Love’s Intensive- Seminar may traverse as he or she enters MOL entry level activities. Eventually a vulnerable new member’s entire social world becomes MOL based, at the expense of family, former friendships, and work relationships.

True MOL members relinquish personal direction to the mercy of MOL’s leadership. They believe that MOL involvement and recruiting others will help them “break free of this illusory world” to “come home to their True Self” as taught by their deceased “Lord Gourasana.”

With hidden camera footage of actual group “Intensives” and “meditations,” Stegeman highlights practices known to alter brain chemistry and create a highly suggestible state in vulnerable participants : long hours, limited sleep, no caffeine, no contact with outsiders, highly emotional small group confessionals, dancing naked and singing embraced with others – regressing to the state of a child at summer camp. Stegeman graphically compares MOL’s methods to those used by the late Reverand Jim Jones of the People’s Temple in Jonestown.

Participants in MOL "Intensive" or "Seminar"

Stegeman interviews various experts for psychological and legal implications of promoting such practices as therapy.

As with any “cult” membership, no one intends to join a cult. A person at time of crisis seeks help, finds a “loving” support group and unwittingly is both exploited and becomes a co-conspirator. The ultimate goal is cult expansion while padding the leaders’ wealth and power.

Limitations of this TV show are that the investigator did not reach MOL’s higher echelons to reveal leadership’s lifestyle and orchestrations. Reaching higher levels of MOL requires more time, donation of large sums of money, recruitment power, an accessible trust fund or business skills needed by the cult. As in any cult, only tested devoted MOL members reach the upper echelons.

Overall, the TV show was a breakthrough of insider cult reporting.

Thank you to Alberto Stegeman and crew!

Two former MOL participants blogged responses to the TV expose’ – linked below.

Dutch promotion for “Miracle of Love” TV expose’

"Lord Gourasana"

"Kalindi La Gourasana" speaks

The Netherlands is known as one of the world’s most socially and religiously tolerant societies. However, Dutch social tolerance does not extend to tolerance of clandestine abuse.

The Hague’s coexistence of Dutch parliament with United Nations’ international judiciary dramatically exemplifies the Netherlands’ co-existing concern for social freedom and intolerance of abuse.

This week, Dutch media furor revolves around an upcoming TV show to detail a sect which operates covertly in Dutch society by applying psychologically and financially destructive methods to its members. The group also has branches elsewhere in the world.

Dutch undercover reporter Alberto Stegeman exposes the Dutch division of the “Miracle of Love” (MOL) cult, whose deemed voice of God Carol Seidman aka “Kalindi La Gourasana” died last year. David Swanson aka “Lord Gourasana” as MOL’s deemed incarnation of God died a number of years ago.

(My obituary for Seidman aka Kalindi with other informative links can be read here )

Stegeman’s investigation involved one year of cult infiltration with hidden recording equipment. The show will detail MOL’s Dutch operations, including footage to reveal MOL’s loving-abusive brand of social persuasion “brainwashing” during MOL’s Seminar / Intensive.

The final Dutch televised expose’ can be viewed on Dutch TV SBS 6, February 26 Sunday evening , 9:30 pm.

Non Dutch audiences may watch the same show online on February 27, Monday, through the show’s website, check on “Programma Gemist”

Translation from Dutch to English of key sections from above video clip of MOL’s Seminar / Intensive :

Undercover during the Seminar (Intensive) : (00:00 – 00:08)

Miracle of Love member: We don’t talk about anything that happens in this room.

First reaction presenter : (00:08 – 00:30)

This infiltration took more than a year. Because we would like to know what is
really going on in this community. Nobody knows about it. We don?t know anything
about cults. We know only the stories from people that left cults. We know the
stories from people that say a family member is involved and I don’t see him
anymore. We wanted to know what is really going on. Is there a cult in the
Netherlands? And how do they brainwash people?

Undercover during the Seminar: (00:30 – 00:34)

Miracle of Love leader: I want to fuck my mother, I want to fuck my brother, I
want to be fucked by an animal..

Second reaction presenter: (00:34 – 00:57)

They say that they are a faith community. They say that they want the best for
all the people around. But we saw – as a member – that it is a cult who is
trying to brainwash people. Finally it is just about giving your money and
saying goodbye to your identity. Friends and family are not important anymore.

Dutch undercover journalist during the Seminar: (0057: 01:04)

Everybody is dancing and running around naked. Can you please get me out of

Third reaction presenter: (01:04 – 01:15)

I?m disguised as a worried father from my colleague, who was inside this cult. I
went to the Seminar and then you can see that you cannot go inside.

Undercover: (01:15 – 01:21)

Miracle of Love member: I understand that you are the father?

Journalist Alberto Stegeman: Yes.

Miracle of Love member: We have a workshop going on. People from outside cannot
go inside.

Undercover during the Seminar (01:21 – 01:25)

Miracle of Love leader: Say it: butt fuck. butt fuck, butt fuck, butt fuck,
butt fuck.

Undercover (01:25 – 01:33)

Journalist Alberto Stegeman: I just want to see what is going on inside. Just as
a father, because I want to know what my daughter is doing.

Miracle of Love member: No, that is not possible.

New series of hidden camera reports starts Sunday on SBS 6

Undercover in Nederland reveals shocking scenes within Dutch sect

Rumours and stories about sects in the Netherlands have done the rounds for
years, but up to now there has never been any proof. This Sunday, in Undercover
in Nederland, investigative journalist Alberto Stegeman will reveal some intense
and never before seen images of what really goes on behind a sect’s closed
doors. In the past year, Alberto Stegeman and his team secretly infiltrated the
Miracle of Love sect; originally from America, this organisation – which
purports to be a religious community – has been recruiting members in the
Netherlands since 2006. The hidden camera images show how members are
deliberately being mislead, have to follow bizarre orders given by the leaders
and become estranged from their families and friends. Undercover in Nederland
will be broadcast on SBS 6 from 9.30 p.m. on Sunday 27 February.

Alberto Stegeman: “The last serious investigation into sects dates back to the
early eighties, and no effective legislation has ever been passed in this area.
We therefore knew little or nothing about this world, apart from the stories of
people who had managed to extricate themselves from such groups or people, for
example, who had lost a family member to such an organisation. This report will
change all that, at long last. Miracle of Love is a sinister society that seems
to be aimed at taking away people’s money, their possessions and ultimately even
their identity.”

The report shows clearly how members are literally and metaphorically stripped
of everything. “People are asked to dance around naked, they have to fantasize
about having sex with their own mother and we even filmed someone who had to
imagine murdering a family member. Everyone has to follow the orders given by
the leaders. During these sessions, which can last for days, there can be no
phone calls, no coffee may be drunk, no social conversation is allowed,
participants are deprived of sleep and they are not told in advance what is
going to happen. The leaders of this sect seek to convince the members that
normal life is an illusion. Everything is aimed at letting go of your own
identity and opting for Miracle of Love. To achieve this end, the leaders use
truly appalling methods.”

The leaders do not allow anyone to speak about what happens within the walls.
Members have to sign a confidentiality agreement to this end. “This long-term
undercover project, recordings for which took us nearly a year to complete, will
give everyone a chance to see exactly what happens when people are sucked into a
society like this”, Stegeman says.

In the programme, various experts will advocate regulations and legislation to
combat such abuses and to prevent them happening in the future. Stegeman: “I
anticipate that the report will cause quite a stir, not least among politicians
in The Hague.”

Ding Dong Kalindi’s Dead – Miracle of Love “Master” dies

“Kalindi La Gourasana” from her book

“Ultimate Freedom: Union with God”

Kalindi La Gourasana (her name should be sung), aka Carol Seidman, deemed Voice of God for the Miracle of Love cult allegedly passed away on April 18th, 2010 from disseminated intravascular coagulation, a complication of renal failure.  She was in her early fifties.

As reported in Kalindi’s online obituary in the Denver Post, “Kalindi was the founder of Miracle of Love Church, creator of the Miracle of Love Seminar, and spiritual leader of the Path to Ultimate Freedom. She came into this life to help thousands of people reestablish their loving relationship with God, and for those who desire it, to break the cycle of birth and death and return Home to God.”

Kalindi’s daughter, Maha, invited her mother’s followers to participate in a 12-day period of “dedication of celebration of our beloved master Kalindi G” from April 24-May 5.

Kalindi La Gourasana, previously known by her given name of Carol Seidman, was the widow of the Lord Gourasana whose given name was David Swanson. Swanson as Lord Gouarsana claimed to be an incarnation of God.  Kalindi assumed leadership of the Miracle of Love in 1995 upon the passing of Swanson/ Lord Gourasana.  After her husband’s death, Kalindi claimed to be God’s voice on Earth, speaking for MOL’s Lord Gourasana.

The greatest legacy of Kalindi & Gourasana, is their establishment of the “Church of Exodus” whose name changed to the “Miracle of Love Church” (MOL) after the Heaven’s Gate suicides (not directly related to Miracle of Love). The Miracle of Love cult group has undergone many name changes, and relocations of central headquarters. Current names include “Miracle of Love Seminar,”  “Twenty First Century Transformation Center”, “The Seminar” / “Love’s Awakening Intensive”, “Modern Day Meditation Center”, “Freedom Walk”, and Love’s Awakening Intensive, Love of God Workshops.”  Locations are worldwide.  The largest centers currently seem to be in Colorado, North Carolina and Munich, however this changes every few years.

An entry level MOL member begins by attending their workshop called “The Seminar” (formerly “The Intensive”)  The Seminar is a classic Large Group Awareness Training program using known methods to psychologically break down participants through long hours, emotional public confessionals, strict diet control and strict social control.  This combination over several days or longer alters brain chemistry to render participants more impressionable. A neurochemical high results at the end of this Intensive, similar to a “runner’s high.”  Participants are led to believe that this high is the experience of God and unconditional love, granted them by Kalindi.

Graduates of the Seminar often report they feel reborn, replenished, high, transformed, and newly dedicated to breaking attachments in order to focus upon pursuit of God and “Breaking free” from deemed pain of Earth life.

Kalindi and Gourasana taught others to “Break Free” of this earthly life of suffering to pursue their version of the True Realm of Existence. “Breaking free”, according to MOL teachings, requires following MOL’s strict lifestyle mandates of dress, behavior, speech, domestic organization, practicing Gourasana Meditation Practice (GMP), and especially donating ample money and recruitment efforts for MOL’s Mission.

Insider sources have told stories of Kalindi’s abuse to her inner core of followers, including dictating marriages, divorces, name changes and child conceptions. Her extravagant personal habits allegedly included spending over $100,000 annually on her wardrobe by some reports, and an increasing dependency upon chemical substances.

In the early days of MOL, Kalindi often played the dominatrix goddess, ostensibly to break her followers free of preconceived ideas of love and attachment.  Using the lure of freely expressed love without attachments, valued MOL recruits and donors were often rewarded with unconditionally loving partners in gratitude for their devotion/donations to Kalindi’s path to God.

Reputedly, MOL’s new figurehead leaders will include Kalindi’s grown daughter, Maha, Racole Tackett and The Lady, amongst others.

Maha Swanson is the beautiful youthful voice, and heir apparent as the only daughter of MOL’s Voice of God.

Racole Tackett is a therapist and expounded as a spiritual master in MOL.  She is known for using such phrases as “What is about you that makes you feel that way?” to break her clients down, doubt their emotions, and turn increasingly toward MOL directives.

The Lady, another MOL “Master” whose given name is never revealed, plays the model of unconditional love and acceptance, doting upon those who perhaps miss having an idealized mother-figure.

The Miracle of Love is offering extensive support to their global membership, using their leader’s death to further accentuate group bonding.  MOL’s memorial activities are centralized at their Denver and Munich centers.  Other MOL centers globally are undoubtedly lending their support through this challenging time.  For more information on MOL’s memorial activities for Kalindi you may phone their Denver center at (USA) 877-535-4215 or their Worldwide Conference Call Call Supervisor, Juliana Martinez at (USA) 619-770-9672.  According to Maha’s message to MOL’s members, gifts, flowers or cards may be delivered to MOL’s Denver Center. The Denver  MOL Center is located at 4277 West 43rd Avenue, Denver, CO 80212, USA.

Time will tell how the Miracle of Love transforms itself, its message and marketing in Kalindi’s absence.

With Kalindi’s passing, many MOL members may be mourning the loss of their living godhead.

Others may begin to doubt their spiritual directives, since their Lord Gourasana had promised that Kalindi would have a long life.

Those who choose to leave the MOL now may find themselves in a moment of crises and self doubt.
